Nevada White Pelican - 3 Blue Heron - 2 Whistling Swans - Fred Wright reported seeing about 600 on open area NE of area we were in, saw them the 14th. Common Canada Geese - about 800 - in winter wheat field. Lesser Snow Goose - 1 with the canadas Mallards - 25 in open drains Baldepates - 6 American Golden-eye - 1 full male with the geese American Merganser F or imm with 2"-deep, 5" long centrarchid fish in bill, but he dropped it and flew as we approached. Red-tailed Hawks - 4 Marsh Hawks - 5 Prairie Falcon - flushed one from cottonwood just east of Stillwater. Valley Quail - one covey of 15-20 in greasewood area. Pheasants - 2 seen Horned Larks - small flocks here and there Black-billed Magpies - about 15 seen Raven - 40 on ground in one area- feeding on something dead. Nevada Shrike - 2 Meadowlark - 1 Brewer Blackbirds - about 250 on wire lines Gambel White-crowned Sparrow Dec. 15, 1949, Fallon - N. edge of Desert Mtn. foothills, Churchill Co. on US 95, heading south. 1 p.m.Nevada Marsh Hawk Sparrow Hawk - 2 seen Red-shafted Flicker Black-billed Magpies - 15-20 Meadowlarks Brewer Blackbirds Bullock Oriole - many old nests in cottonwoods in this area. December 15, 1949, N end and N½ of W side, Walker Lake, Mineral Co.Nevada 1330-1400 PST Western Brebes - 50 Whistling Swans - small groups of about 6/group scattered over the lake. Each group of six had 2 adults and 4 immatures. Total number seen was about 75 swans. Occasionally a couple of the groups would swim together, making ogroups of 12-14. Canada Geese - 175-200 Baldepates - 10-12 Pintails - 25-30 Shoveller - 1 M and 4 F or imm. Marsh Hawks Coots - 100's in small and large rafts on the lake, never over 200 yards offshore, however.
