Western Grebe - 1 in middle of lake American Golden-eyes - a dozen near the lower end of the lake, with Coots - about 125, mostly at lower end of lake (east) No waterfowl on Boca Reservoir, Nevada Co. - nearly frozen over. Truckee River, at Boca Bridge, Nevada Co. 1130-110 American Golden-eyes - flushed from below bridge - 17 flew up- stream, and 10 downstream. 9 of the 27 were full males. Truckee River at Reno (Wingfield Park), Nevada. 1130-1230 a.m. 3/4 the river width frozen over. Mallards - 180 (63 males - full). Coots - 7 Pyramid Lake, Washoe Co. Nevada - 145-215 p.m. Most of Trukee River near Nixon frozen over. Also back of 12'-hi dam passing Western Grebe - 24 seen along west side of lake20& sec-ft. White Pelican - 1 near Truckee R. inlet Mallards - 40 on mud bar in stretch of open water below Nixon. Baldpates - 13-14 with the mallards below Nixon. American Golden-eye - 6 seen of which 2 were males. Ruddy Duck - 1 Sage Hen - 4 flushed from very sparse desert scrub along west side of lake Coots - 26 ? Gull - 1 Black-billed Magpie - 1 in cottonwood near Nixon Nevada Shrike - 1 near Nixon Purple Finches - 3 seen in scrub area just south of Nixon. Fernley Sink, Lyon County, Nevada - most of area frozen. Marsh Hawk immature Short-eared owls - a total of 5 seen perched on low bushes, or flying over marshy areas along the highway. A winter or migration influx? Some appeared rather small. Since there are few records for this owl in Nevada, special note should be made of these obs. (Also Toulon ) Black-billed Magpie - 1 on low greasewood. Toulon Sink, Lovelock Valley, Churchill-Pershing Cos. Nevada - 4 p.m. Sink and feeder drains iced over. Marsh Hawk male Ravens - 4 (2 pr). Lower Lovelock Valley, Pershing Co. Nevada - 415-5 p.m. Covered most of lower valley, and over to old Big-5 Damsite. Drains and most of Humboldt River Channel frozen over. Green-winged Teal - 3 below flowage over diversion dam. 1 Mallard - ditto Red-tailed Hawk Marsh Hawk - 5 and 2M and 2 F - total 10 Pheasants - 4 F and 1 M Killdeer Short-eared Owls - a total of 5 seen flying over pasture and alfalfa fields in the area. One made pass at something on the ground, and when it missed a male marsh hawk, following behind made a pass, too. Horned Larks - 75 Meadowlarks - 3 Song Sparrow along river.
