Sept. 20, 1947, 12-mile Swamp, and en-route, 8-1045, hi-thin Brkn, calm, 42° (at 8). Pied-billed Grebe immature in open water by bridge, and did not fly. Mallards - saw 3, and a marsh hawk flushed about 35 others. Pintails - saw 25 or 30 flushed from north end by a marsh hawk Green-winged Teal - saw 5 for sure, plus some 50& flushed by the marsh hawk, of which some may have been blue-wings. Vultures - circling over the swamp, and everywhere you look over the country, in ones, 2's, or up to 5 in a fairly small group. Cooper Hawk - watched one on west side of swamp, trying to catch Redwings- it failed. Marsh Hawk male quartering back and forth over the swamp, flushing Mallards, Pintails Green-wing Teal, Wilson Snipe, and Redwings. Sparrow Hawk on tall dead snag by the road Pheasants - common in the fields around the area, and coming from Corvallis Coots - 4 wer e seen on open water Wilson Snipe - flushed at least 4 different birds in the north and south ends. Killdeer - common here and there. Calling. Saw 11 in one flight, and 5 in another. Vaux Swift - a couple in with the swallows over the swamp. Flicker - 2 or 3 seen n flying across the swamp. Horned Larks - saw about 15 of them, mostly immature birds in with Savannahs and Pipi Violet-green Swallows - 2-300 over the swamp, mostly immatures, with the Barn Swallows, of which there must have been at least 350-400 birds. Over fields, Cliff Swallows - about 25 or 50 were seen, (I'd guess). too. Stellar Jay - calling from ash thicket on west side of swamp. Raven - flew over, and chased by Blackbirds Oregon Chickadees - just 2 seen Tule Wren - saw 3 of them, and heard a couple of others Robin - 2 or 3 seen Western Bluebirds - 11 flew over in one flock Cedar Waxwings - 2 large flocks of 35-50 were seen at about the same time. Audubon Warbler - a couple seen American Pipits - mixed in with Horned Larks and Savannah Sps at edge of road in grassland are a. A couple perched on fence posts, and tipped continuously. Pac. Yellowthroat - still a few occupying the spirea shrubs of the swamp area. Redwings - about 100 here and there. Brewer Blackbirds - s een all the way down in pairs, or small groups of pairs of up to 30 or so birds. Willow Goldfinches - immature and molting birds in flocks of up to 75 or so birds. Savannah Sparrows - in with Horned Larks and Pipits in grassland area. Song Sparrows here and there, singing. Clocked one at 28 m.p.h. ahead of the car. Sept. 20, 1947, Flats west of Greenberry Sta., 1045-1115 a.m. -Ø/ N4, 60° American Rough-legged Hawk - had ample opportunity to observe a bird of late 1st or 2nd year plumage perched on a fence post in this flat prairie area. When it flew, it climbed about 40 feet up and then hovered nearly motionless against the wind, like a Sparrow hawk, searching the ground for rodents below it. Flickers common Mourning Dove ½-grown young perched on board fence. I got within 5 feet of it. Long-tailed Jay in scrub oak thickets Robins - in scrub oak and ash trees along dry creek bed. Sept 20, 1947, 3 p.m. Stewart Lake Mallards - 15-20 Green-winged Teal - some 20 present Shovellers in immature plumage, with bright speculum - 30-40. Sept. 21, 1947 - Corvallis - 940 a.m. Fox Sparrow - a pair on the lawn in the backyard.
