September 17, 1947, Poison Oak Lake, Linn Co., 1300-1415, 15 Brkn, W 5, warm. Green Heron flushed from south side by the highway, and later from the north end, when it flew into an ash tree and just perched there. Vultures - circling over, and no matter where you looked in the area, they could be seen in l's, 2's, or more. Wilson Snipe - flushed twice from SW corner, and west side. Flew up to 100 feet or so Vaux Swifts - in small flock high over D. Fir tree tops with V. C. Swallows Flickers - must have been 8 or 10 around the lake, and all were giving the "chuckling" c all notes, as if talking back and forth to each other. Violet-green Swallows - a few Long-tailed Jays - I saw at least 8 of these birds, as they fed% in the oaks, secur- ing acorns, and flying off with them (to store them??). They would try to give calls with acorns in their bills, and it changed the tones considerably. Oregon Chickadees - seemed to be everywhere in the fir, and oak, and ash, and brush as well. Calling as they fed thru the area. Slender-billed Nuthatches - 3 seen feeding on oak trees W. Bluebirds - 7 flew over Cedar Waxwings - 5 or 6 heard and seen: Seattle Wren nest in poison oak Audubon Warblers - a few in the firs and oaks. nest, with canopy of leaves over it. Purple Finches - a few in the tree tops Willow Goldfinches - small flocks flew over, calling. Oregon Towhee - "mewing" Song Sparrow - heard just one singing. Sept. 17, 1947, Stewart Lake, Benton Co., 1415-1530, 15Brkn, W6, warm, Ocsni RW- Blue Heron flushed from top of old oak on west side of lkae. Mallards - 25-30 on the lake, no full adult male plumage seen. Wood Ducks - 15-20 seen, 1 full adult male Gairuner Woodpecker working trunks of willows Violet-green Swallows - a few Seattle Wren - one seen. Oregon Towhee Song Sparrow Sept. 18, 1947, Avery Park, Corvallis, 9-10 a.m. Clear, cool, N 6-12. Anthony Green Heron on floating log in river. As I approached it twitched its tail up and down nervously as I have seen them do before. I stopped within 35 feet of it, and it turned its head directly towards me and finally flew across the river to a pile of logs where it froze for 2 or 3 minutes, before climbing over the pile and dropping to the edge of the shallow water where it proceeded to hunt for food. Vulture circling over Flicker - 3 or 4 seen, and heard calling Red-breasted Sapsucker - 4 on one snag, playing and "talking" with each other, as has been observed before Stellar Jay - 4 were heard and seen in ash trees on the south edge of D. Fir forest Oregon Chickadees in small flocks working the trees and brush Slender-billed Nuthatch working ash, maple, and D. Fir Seattle Wrens - 2 different ones scolding. Robin - a few in the tree tops Russet-backed Thrush - 3 or 4 in the brush on the south side, calling. Cedar Waxwings everywhere in the areas along the river. This a.m. at 645, I saw some feeding on Mtn. Ash berries in town. Cassin Vireo calling Audubon Warbler - a few working D. Fir and ash. Western Tanager - just one imm. or female seen in ash Evening Grosbeaks - 6 flew into Big-leaf maple, and ate a few of the samaras-flew on Purple Finches singing here and there Green-backed Goldfinch Oregon Towhee Junco Song Sparrow
