September 11, 1947, Big Lake, 1300-1530, 1630-1830. Clear and warm, and calm. Barrow's Golden-eyes - All either immatures (altho dark-headed), or in change plumage. I got within 25 feet of them as they fed in a backwater area at the NE end of the lake. Sometimes all were down at once, and it was as these times that I sneaked up close to them, freezing as they came up. When I did let them see me move, audible, low alarm, or alert notes were given, but they didn't fly, and as I walked up on them they just swam slowly ahead of me, and thru the inlet into the main part of the lake. Finally they took off (one not being able to leave for lack of primaries), but it ran 100 yards trying it. The others got off the water in 75' or so. They were joined by 3 others in mid-lake where wing and body stretching took place. Vultures - one circled over the area Clarke Nutcrackers - a few calling, and some seen flying here and there. Red-breasted Nuthatches working in small flocks thru the trees Hermit Thrush - 2 found in deep woods 1 mile N of lake. Audubon Warblers in tree tops, calling singular notes, etc. September 11, 1947, Hayrick Butte, 1 mi N of Big Lake, 1530-1630, clear and warm. Ravens over ledge of butte Clarke Nutcrackers around the butte, circling and calling. Red-breasted Nuthatches in forest below south side. Juncos in pairs here and there. September 12, 1947, Big Lake, 0615-0940, clear, and calm. Few Hi sctd Cirrus. At 630 a.m.: (40 air, and 53 water). Mallards - flushed 2 in autumn plumage from a pool off NE end of lake. Golden-eyes - 7 seen in mid-lake Flicker here and there Alaska 3-toed Woodpecker - two birds came thru camp area, and others calling. Swallows (sp. ???) ll were seen cirling and calling at at least 400' high. Oregon Jays 4 immatures seen Stellar Jays Clarke Nutcrackers flying here and there, and calling. Mountain Chickadees in small flocks Red-breasted Nuthatches in small groups with the Chickadees Robins Mountain Bluebirds - 5 birds were seen. Audubon Warblers - a few working thru the tree-tops. Hermit Warblers - atleast 5 different birds were seen, and others heard Western Tanager calling Vesper Sparrows in meadow area. Juncos here and there. Song Sparrow Big Lake to Clear Lake - 0940-1045 a.m. Sept. 12, 1947 Ruffed Grouse - one bird flushed into tree at 40 feet Flickers - we tallied 14 birds feeding on the ground as we approached them along this stretch of sandy, and lava rock, forest, etc. Stellar Jays here and there Robins - 3 were seen.
