September 7, 1947, Willamette R. Gravel Pits, Corvallis, 330-515 p.m. OVC/10 Brkn, W to SW 7-15. RW- Blue Herons - several seen, o ne immature feeding just across the river from me, and moving towards an Anthony's Green Heron that was standing at the edge of the river on the gravel bar. Another immature bird lit on a piece of drift wood some 75 feet from the water, and squatted there a while, then moving onto the gravel and squatting there, as if trying to escape the cold winds. Wood Ducks - 3 flew from a "slough" on the other side Killdeer - a few on the gravel bars. Spotted Sandpipers - 2 seen flying down the river, in mid-stream. Vaux Swifts - 150-200 flying low to high over the river, and nearby trees, calling, and feeding in the rain. Kingfisher - one seen Violet-green Swallows - a few immature or molting birds in with the Swifts. Cedar Waxwings - 25 - 30 in flocks in the cottonwoods and willows near the river. Willow Goldfinches in weed patch away from the river. September 9, 1947, 12-mile Swamp, 130-315 p.m. 20 ø warm, SW-W 4-12. ash leaves falling rapidly Blue Herons - 2 flushed and croaked while flying Mallaras - a flock of 4, 3, 2, 7, and 9 put up here and there Pintails - 5 flushed - 1 male just getting full plumage Blue-winged Teal - flushed 4 in with Mallards and Green-winged Teal - ther e was a flock of 18 of them, in æt/ female plumage. Shovelers - there were 2 on open water near the center bridges in F plumage. Vultures circling over Pheasants - 2 cocks flushed near water's edge Coots - 3 were seen near center bridges. Flicker calling Gairdner Woodpecker working on 3/8" dia. horizontal ash twig just 5 feet from me. Violet-green Swallows - 50 or so seen Bank Swallows - about 15 in with the other swallows. Barn Swallows - there must have been over 500 of them flocked near the bridges, perched in small ash trees, on fence lines, and on the ground in the gravel. Cliff Swallows - perhaps a 100 were mixed in with the Barn Swallows. Tule Wren - just heard one Robins - 25 to 30 in the ash groves at the south end. Cedar Waxwings - 15-20 in ash trees at edge of water. Pacific Yellowthroats - a few in the brush clumps, scolding, etc. Redwings - a flock of 250-300 perched in a Spirea thicket in the center of the swamp Willow Goldfinches - small flock along fence row. Oregon Towhee Song Sparrow dusting inthe road. September 9, 1947, Oak-pine-prairie area E and N of Winkle Butte, 315-4 p.m. Vultures circling over Cooper Hawk - over Pine forest area. Redtail Hawk circling with the vultures Mourning Doves - just 2 seen along 15 miles of road Sparrow Hawk - just one seen along 15 miles of road Stellar Jay in Oak-Pine L. Fir woodland Raven - flying over oak-pine area. Brewer Blackbirds - flock of 45-50 feeding in plowed field, and wet ditch. Willow Goldfinches common in flock of from 30-100 White-crowned Sparrows - saw 4 in a hawthorne thicket.
