August 27, 1947, Corvallis Gravel Pits, 0830-0900, 10 Sctd, ½GF, cool Green Heron on sand bar of main river Gadwalls - 4 of them flying downstream Spotted Sandpipers, 2 seen Killdeers on gravel bars Western Sandpipers - 5 on gravel bars and calling now and then. Mour ning Loves flew over Flicker Harris Woodpecker flew over, and called. Oregon Chickadees working ash and fence rows Seattle Wren scolding Cassin Vireo calling Pileolated Warbler in cottonwoods, calling Western Tanager immature - one seen Willow Goldfinches in wild mustard patches and gravel Oregon Towhee Green-backed Goldfinches in area of gravel pile. Chipping Sparrows in gravel area. Song Sparrows calling. August 27, 1947, Avery Park 0900-0945, 10 Sctd, W 3, cool. Valley Quail, 2 pair seen, one 20 feet up in maple, and giving alarm notes to young nearby, as I approached Band-tailed Pigeon - 2 perched in old ash tree Flicker Little Flycatcher Long-tailed Jay scolding Oregon Chickadees Slender-billed Nuthatches Calif. Creepers Robins - a few Russet-backed Thrush calling near river Ruby-crowned Kinglets in tallfirs Cedar Waxwings here and there Cassin Vireos calling frequently Hermit Warblers in tall D. Firs, and calling Pileolated Warblers in ash and maple trees Black-headed Grosbeak feeding on ripe blackberries Juncos in timber August 29, 1947, Oak-Fir ridge, north of Fern Ridge Dam, Lane Co. 915-930 a.m. 8 OVC W5-7, RW-, cool. Vultures circling over Western Bluebird immatures on wire lines and in oaks Towhees Juncos Song Sparrows. Slender-billed Nuthatch in pine-oak area.
