Meadowlark - 2 at about 530 p.m. Sept. 24, 1949, Vallejo Estuary, Napa River, Solano Co, Calif. 0800-0830 a.m. Pica-bill Grebe - 3 Avocets - 175 at CSH 48 bridge American Egret - 7 Western Gull - 2 Coots - 3 California Gull - 10 Black-bellied Plovers - 40 Ring-billed Gulls - 25 1317 Killdeer Monterey Red-shafted Flicker Willets - 25 Long-billed Marsh Wren Godwits - 50 English Sparrows Western Sandpipers and W. Meadowlarks Least Sandpipers Calif. Bicolor Redwings Brewer Blackbirds. Sept. 24, 1949, Vallejo Estuary, Napa River to Sonoma Creek, Solano Co. Calif. 0830-0915 Pied-billed Grebe - 2 White Pelicans - 27 Calif. Blue Heron - 7 American Egrets - 18 Snowy Egrets - 2 Pintails - 125 seen. Of 56 sexed birds, 18 were either full males, or immatures just turning, and 38 were females, immature females, or males. Green-winged Teal - 4 1318 Lesser Scaups - 3 on Sonoma Creek, below CSH 48 bridge. White-tailed Kites - 2 over stubble fields Marsh Hawk - 1 pair harassing the ducks on these marshes Western Willets - 18 Pectoral Sandpipers_ - 1 flock of 7 seen. Yellow-legs - 2 Western Sandpipers - 8 Least Sandpiers - 75 Northern Phalaropes - 28 California Gulls - 4 Ring-billed Gulls - 7 Long-billed Marsh Wren - 3 Samuel's Song Sparrows - 1/30 feet of ditchside that was lined with Baccharis. Sept. 24, 1949, S. Fran. Bay, just Sof Richmond, and NE of Golden-Gate Fields. Eared Grebe Red-backed Sandpipers - 5 Pintails - 350 Western Sandpipers - 80 1319 Sparrow Hawk - 2 Herring Gull adults and imms. feeding on Farallon Killdeer Forester's Terns on pilings. Cormorant viscera. Godwits - 15 & 10 & 3 W. Meadowlarks Western Willets - 60 & 265 & 120 in face of wind, but low in salicornia, etc. Sept. 24, 1949, Jewell Lake, Tilden Park, Berkeley, Alameda Co. 1130-1150 a.m. Mallards - 8 & 1 marked F with 2 silver plates ( Gullions) both hanging from the right side. This female was feeding at the north end with a Baldpate female. Mountain Quail - certain of 1, heard it first on west side of lake. 1320 Coot - 1 unmarked, on SE corner of lake Red-shafted Flicker Black Phoebe - 2 Coast Stellar Jay Intermediate Wren-tit calling Long-billed Marsh Wren W. Meadowlark House Finch singing in Baccharis Green-backed Goldfinch Santa Cruz Song Sparrow (M.m.santacrucis). Pine Siskins.
