July 24, 1947, 12-mile S swamp, Bruce Station, 5 - 6 a.m., 25 Brkn., Cool. Pied-billed Grebe - just one seen, near where seen last week. Blue Heron - - one seen Green Heron - one bird seen in top of ash tree Bitterns - a pair flew from the south to the north end of the swamp, one behind t'other. Mallards - a few Wood Ducks - 3 or 4 seen, together. Hooded Mergansers - 2 immature birds were seen to light near the road. Sparrow Hawk - 3 adults were seen Pheasants - adults feeding in fields, 7 young seen getting gravel in road at one spot. Killdeer Horned Larks - common along fence rows, and singin everywhere. Violet-green Swallows - young birds beginning to flock in mixed flocks Tree Swallows - a few adults and immatures were seen Barn Swallows - many of them present. Some hovering, others circling over the water or high in the air, and others perched with cliffs and Violet-greens on wire lines beside the road. One was observed to probe in the rotting wood of a fence post for food. Others were dusting with Wrens and Song Sparrows in the road just 8 feet in front of the car. Cliff Swallows - a few seen Crow - a few flew over. Tule Wren - dusting in the road ahead of the car. Robin - a few Pacific Yellowthroat - calling and several seen along fence rows. English Sparrows around barn Meadowlarks - beginning to sing, as the sun came up. Brewer Blackbirds - in quite large flocks Redwings - in very large flocks over the swamp area. Other flocks "gritting" in road. Lazuli Buntings - a few heard and seen Purple Finch - a few singing Willow Goldfinch - Towhees in fence rows Song Sparrows - dusting in road a few feet ahead of the car with Wrens and Barn Swallows.
