White Pelicans - 5 American Egrets - 3 Western Gulls California Gulls Forester's Terns - 8 - 10 Least Terns (S. a. browni) - a new life-lister - West edge of city limits at Spenger's Ferry Boat House. Marbled Godwits Willets Black-bellied Plover Western Sandpipers Least Sandpipers This noon I spotted 3 very small terns with several other short-tailed ones that proved to be Forester's Terns in various stages of plumage. The 3 smaller ones had dusky bills, more yellow at the base, and the legs were distinctly yellowish instead of orange-red as in the Forester's. Their call was higher pitched than the Foresters. Also they had dark patches on the wings not present on the Foresters. There is little doubt in my mind that these were least terns. All these terns were working together againsta north wind along theeast side of this arm of Carquinez Straits, hovering about 10 feet over the water, and plunging below the surface whenever they spotted a fish, or other item of food. They would work upwind 50 yards, and then drop swiftly back to the "foot" of the feeding area, and start the course over again. They were observed to eat their catch on the wing, and then proceeding with the fishing. This section of the bay has a narrow strip of sandy beach, with some emergents such as 3-square and cattails on the land-side of the sand areas. Rocks protruded from the bay in shallow water. Murky water. Aug. 13, 1949, 6-mile unimproved road N & NE of Denverton, Solano Co. Barren grasslands. Sparrow Hawks Burrowing Owls - 2 on earthen dike, and 6 perched on top rails of small corral tied against fence. They flew when I stopped within 8 feet of them, but one adult came back and lit opposite me, ducking its body as it gave a scolding note. These birds seemed quite richly colored, compared to faded individuals I've seen elsewhere. Kingbirds - 2 immature Westerns Western Crows - 4 California Shrike Western Meadowlarks - 100's along this road, in tall grass along fencerow. Oregon Vesper Sparrow - just 3 seen W. Lark Sparrows - 3 or 4 seen, and a couple of others heard. 1530-1400 /just W of Bixon-Rio Vista road.
