August 3, 1949, San Joaquin River at Kerckhoff Reservoir (above Millerton Lake) Madera County - Just before dawn started to brighten some, 2 California Pigmy Owls chattered loudly in tops of nearby live oak trees (reminded me of the jungle owlets in Assam, India). Pallid 1285 Soon after this a couple of Wren-tits sang weakly for a few moments. Then 3 different California Woodpeckers called out from almost 3 different directions; the latter 2 seemingly in answer to the first caller. And the for 15 minutes an Ash-throated Flycatcher gave an almost continuous series of 4-syllable, rather unmusical notes. The bird was perched.in a bush- top, but no colors were discernable as it was still too dark. I have never heard these notes from this flycatcher. Purple Finch Sierra Brown Creeper Green-backed Goldfinches - small flocks. Pigmy Nuthatches - 3 Oregon Junco Robin Chipping Sparrows - ad and young. Sierra Hermit Thrush singing 7 coots on Manzanita Lake, south of Bass Lake - Willow Creek. August 3, 1949, Yosemite Valley, Mar iposa County, 14-1530. 1288 American Egret - circling over valley between El Capitan and Cathedral Rocks and it finally headed north, over ridge just east of El Capitan. Black Swift - Nephocetes niger (borealis) - new life lister - just a short glimpse of 2 of them sweeping across face of south-facing cliff on road to Hetch Hetchy. Their coloration and size were unmistakable, even tho I had not seen them before! White-throated Swifts - on SW facing cliff between Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley. Blue-fronted Stellar Jays Robins Russet-backed Thrush Oregon Juncos. 1289 August 12, 1949, Lake Washington, Yolo Co., W of Sacramento. 515-615 p.m. Water levels stable as last winter. Phragmites 8'-9' tall on land, and cattails 8'-8½' above water (it is 5'-10' deep) Excavation of turning basin started 8-7-49. White Pelicans - 4 Black-crowned Night Herons - 5 Sparrow Hawks - 3 Pheasants - 2 at lake, but alfalfa-ditch-weed-dike areas had several/acre-many imm. California Gulls common Forester's Terns - 12 on river Barn/ Western Crows Barn Swallows - 5 at lake, but many cruising over irrigated rice field and Yolo By-pass Suisun long-billed Marsh Wren California Shrike Calif. Bicolor Redwings Brewer Blackbirds in mixed flocks with the redwings - flock sizes 25-125 or so.
