August 2, 1949, Los Banos State Game Refuge, and vicinity, Merced Co. 11 a.m.-noon. White Pelicans - 3 adults, and one young found dead in road. Blue Heron American Egrets - many Snowy Egrets - 1 to 4 of Americans Mallards - 2 Pintails - 30 Cinnamon Teal - 6 Vultures Cooper Hawks W. Red-tailed Hawks Marsh Hawk F Sparrow Hawk Pheasants - 3 immatures (just planted) Gallinules - 3 young Coots and immatures and young (gray) Killdeer Greater Yellow-legs - 3 Long-billed Dowitchers Red Knot - Calidris canutus (rufa) - new life lister. Just west of the refuge I observed 60-65 of them just 50 feet from the road, feeding in a shallow, muddy field pond with avocets and stilts. Used 7-x-35 glasses. They were colored much as the spring plumage dowitcher, but the short bill clinched this ob. In breeding plumage yet, and out of range as recorded previously. Avocets - 1 for 3 stilts Black-necked Stilts - 2/3 of stilts seen were immatures, with brown-grayish black, instead of pure black plumage. 100-125 seen. Wilson Phalaropes in winter plumage Black Terns and immatures or some already in winter plumage. Most in spring plumage. Mourning Doves Monterey Red-shafted Flicker- 2 Western Kingbirds Ash-throated Flycatchers Black Phoebe Barn Swallows Cliff Swallows Yellow-billed Magpies Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wrens W.
