July 16, 1949, Grass Lake at Luther Pass, 7800' elev. El Dorado Co. 0430-0800
on C.S.H.89. Area of lake is sedge, surrounded by willow, aspen and lodgepole.
Mallards - 4 adults and several young.
Spotted Sandpiper in meadow brook area
Long-eared Owl - 1 in old Jeffrey Pine - gave 3"kee-yows" two times.
Rufous Hummingbirds several pairs
Calliope Hummingbird - 1 pair
Monterey Red-shafted Flicker
Pileated Woodpecker
Williamson Sapsucker working Jeffrey pine
White-headed Woodpecker - working aspen - chased from aspen by wood pewee
Wood pewees and young seem to be the most abundant bird. They were calling long
after dark, and occasionally through the night, and at dawn, when I rose.
Western Flycatcher - 1 pair
Olive-sided flycatchers - several calling
Tree Swallow - nest at 15' on N side of aspen in aspen grove
Canada Jays - although clear out of range for this species, I am sure that I heard
a flock working through the forest out of eye-sight.

Short-tailed Mountain Chickadees common - 1 nest hole on S side of aspen at 8' at
edge of hiway. No underbrush an area.
