Pheasants - about 2/acre Killdeer Black-necked Stilt Avocet Black Terns Mourning Loves Monterey-Red-shafted Flickers Nuttall's Woodpeckers Blue Grosbeak - a new life-lister for me ! Observed a male in full plumage, light bill, deep, rich blue body, and chestnut bars on wings, singing from fence post top at 4½'. Later sang at 21' on wire line, and 5' and 5½' in low willows. Head slightly crested. This habitat was marshy plants bordering a large irrigation drainage canal about 30 feet wide. Mostly tall herbage, with only scattered willows and small cottonwoods. The birds territory seemed to embrace an area bordering about 150 yards along the SE side of the canal, and back 100 yards from the canal. This site was 1.4 miles E of Butte Creek, and 3.7 miles W of Pennington Road jct. Calif. 750-830 a.m. The refuge ponds have all been drained except for Deep Lake at the SW corner of the area. A couple of mud puddles exist elsewhere. Much of aquatic veg. has been cut and disced. White Pelicans - 6 on the lake Blue Heron - several perched in tall willows American Egrets - seemed to be flying all direction from an area on Butte Creek north of the refuge at least 6 miles. Vultures very common W. Red-tailed Hawk Coot - 1 pair seen. Western Kingbirds Black Phoebe Mockingbirds - pair in locust at headquarters Calif. Bicolor Redwings Brewer Blackbirds Common Goldfinches feeding in weed patches. July 12, 1949, Pennington - Sutter City, around west side of Marysville Buttes. Mostly wild oak, rock-strewn hillsides with few oaks and cottonwoods. Occasional: Vultures, Western Kingbirds, Calif. Shrikes, and Purple Finches.
