July 3, 1949, 12-mile Swamp, Benton County, Oregon 1300-1330 PDST with Ard !! young Pied-billed Grebes - 3 Blue Heron - 1 Wood Duck F Vultures everywhere W. Red-tailed Hawk Sparrow Hawks Bobwhites calling no coots Killdeer Mourning Doves Flicker Horned Larks seen and heard singing Barn Swallows and young quite common over swamp. Pair at shed. Visited nest and the young were gone. Large pile of feces on floor under nest. This nest contained 5 well-advanced eggs on June 11, 1949. Cliff Swallows - adults and young dipping for water north of bridges. Western Crows perched in dead ash in south end. Oregon Chickadees Tule Wrens - one or two heard singing Robins Russet-backed Thrush singing Cedar Waxwings - many Yellow Warblers Pacific Yellowthroats W. Meadowlarks Northwestern Redwings Brewer Blackbirds Black-headed Grosbeak - 1 M in ash west of bridges. Song Sparrow. Carp, yellow perch and Oregon Pike seen swimming near bridges. Many bullfrog tadpoles floating on aquatic vegetation near surface. Sparganium simplex just developing heads.
