STILLWATER WILDLIFE MGT. AREA, CHURCHILL CO., NEVADA June 30, 1949 8:30am to 4:00pm Trip to Nutgrass Area. Drove truck to point and unloaded boat. Rowed boat around edge of nut-grass. Walked out through nut-grass and cattail to pond for a couple of hours. Rowed a couple of miles into the open water. Rowed to island. No nests on it. Western Grebe - Saw at least 60 adults, and 5 broods. 4 of the broods contained 2 birds. The other 1. Found one dead adult. White Pelican - About 500 on the island. About 100 others scattered throughout the area. Blue Heron - 11 Black-crowned Night Heron - 9 and 3 young fully grown, but in brown plumage, and flight awkward. Snowy Egret - 12 White-faced Glossy Ibis - 33 including one flock of 25. Mallard - 800 mostly all males in various stages of moulting. Only saw one female THATXI for sure. Gadwall - 500. Moulting. Pintail - 1400 mostly all or all males moulting. Cinnamon Teal - 12 males. is all. Shoveller - 40 mostly all or all males moulting. Redhead - 400 males or mostly all males. Not as far along in their moult as the dabblers. SOMEHOW Many show no signs of moulting. 17 broods. Broods were as follows: 6, 8, 12, 13, 4, 5, 10, 5, 11, 9, 14, 12, 4, 5, 6, 3, 5. All in downy stage except one of the broods of 4 in which 3 were partly feathered. One downy one with the 4 must have been adapted or the 3 were adapted. Mean of all broods: 7.76. Also saw 2 pairs, separate, male and female together. THEXXWAEXXAT I saw at least LEY 1000 more ducks in the area which were too far off to identify. In one inlet where the ducks concentrated there were about 3 feathers per square foot in the water. Ruddy Duck - Brood of 6 with male and female. 3 males and one pair with male and female together. Marsh Hawk 2 Coot - 250. Only 4 broods. Were as follows: 3, 2, 2, 2, Avocet - 2 Black-necked Stilt - XXBRADS.XXMAXXXMAXXKAR 34 adults, 30 of wich were concentrated in area where water was about 4" deep in THE NUTGRASS a thin concentration of nutgrass. Also 5 young. Calif. Gull - About 20 with the Pelicans on the island. Gull, Bonapart's or Franklin's - Wish I knew which. Small gull, small- er than the californias. Gray color, head black except for white around eye and bill. Forster's Tern - 10 around a island of nutgrass. Island all matted down except for fringe, and built up quite high by the dead stalks. 2 nests off the island, one with 3 eggs and the other with 4. Eggs laid on the nutgrass stalks which had been built up slightly where the eggs were laid. Took picture. 71 birds onthe island. Caspian Tern - Saw 2. Black Tern - Saw 3 around the island. Horned Larks - All through the desert around the nug-grass. As be- fore a flock was concentrated around the water-hole where the shack stands beside the main road. W Marsh Wrens - Yellow-headed Blackbirds Nevada Savannah Sparrow - in a strip of saltgrass along the water. A few present. 1243 1243
