STILLWATER RANGE, NEAR JOB'S PEAK, CHURCHIL CO., NEVADA
June 26, 1949 9:30am to 3:00pm

Trip started at turn-off from county road which runs along east side of Stillwater wildlife area. Road turns off at tin cabin opposite nutgrass area of refuge. DORVE Drove to end of road, which ended IN where pinon pine started. End of road estimated to be at 6,000 ft. We walked about 500 feet higher up canyon and up on slope in pines.
Habitat - PINXXXpine on RINGAS Lower part of canyon desert. Upper part with small creek with Rosa, Prunus demissa, Artemesia tridentata, Ribes, Salix, MAXEF a grove of Populus tremuloides and Prunus andersoni or fasciculata. Slopes above about 6,000 ft. covered with pinon pine. Amelanchier also along creek.
Chukar Partridge - In desert part of canyon at about 5,000 ft. 3 adults and 6 feathered young. The birds quickly ran up the canyon, but we had a good view of them.
California Jay - Saw at least 2. Scolding from thicket in creek incicated that a nest with young was present.
Rock Wren - Singing from rocky outcrops in upper part of canyon.
Warbling Vireo - Singing from creek in willows.
Black-throated Gray Warbler - Saw and heard this species in pine.
Brewer's Blackbird - 9 in lower part of canyon
Bullock Oriole - nest in tall willow. Male feeding.
Lazuli Bunting - Singing from Willows. Saw one. Others singing.
House Finch - Singing from cliffs in lower part of canyon at about 5,000 ft.
Nevada Towhee - Saw several along upper part of creek.
Vesper Sparrow - Quite a few all along just above willows in open areas.
Brewer's Sparrow - saw one at about 5,000 ft. in lower part of canyon
Fox Sparrow - Could have been a green-tailed towhee, as I only heard the bird sing, and I still can't tell a Green-tailed towhee song from a fox Sparrow.

Valley Quail - Finally saw one within the refuge boundary in way back from trip above. Along Kent's fence.
Burrowing Owl - Outside refuge. 3 about 8:00pm near Freeman Ranch.
