Elko County, Nevada. Snowy Egrets Bittern Black-crowned Night Herons Vulture Red-tailed Hawks Swainson Hawk Marsh Hawk Sagehen - adult and 3 flying young in gravel road in sagebrush-river bottom area. Killdeer Wilson Snipes- many pairs in area, but I couldnot locate any nests. [illegible] circled within 5 feet of my head, giving notes continually. Spotted Sandpipers on gravel bars. One observed to feed on Cicadid, and beating it against the rocks of the gravel bar, to kill it, I guess. Willets - 2 pairs in wet pasture area on Malvista Ranch. Evidently breecing, but I couldn't locate nest, especially in one spot where I was when the birds would make angered dives at me, missing me only by inches. They must certainly be nesting here, for these actions of the adults indicate it. Wilson Phalaropes - dozens of pairs. Pairs often circled within 5 feet of my head, giving singular notes, continually. Mourning Doves Montana Horned Owl flushed from willow thicket near stream.
