June 21, 1949, South Fork, Humboldt River, SW of Elko, Elko Co., up to Twin Bridges Tenmile and Huntington Creeks in this area. White Pelican Snowy Egret - many American Egret - 2 Black-crowned Night Heron - .2 Blue Heron Mallards Cinnamon Teals American Mergansers - 11 young with female - young would dive and swim 20 feet under Sagehen - adult and 2 ½-grown young crossing gravel road in sagebrush water and river botten habitat. First I have ever seen Vultures Swainson Hawks W. Redtail Hawk - found a female circling close to us over a high rock outcrop just upstream from the mouth of 10-mile Creek. Two nest sites on SW slope of pinnacle outcrop, within 6 feet of each other. Took pics. Lower nest piled 3' high and used this year. I found 2 young birds perched on a small sagebush about 50 yards uphill from the nest sites. They were on a west slope, exposed to strong NW winds this p.m. They were both openmouthed and"dripping" from their mouths down the tip of the lower bill. As Dan Slater moved in to take picture, one young flew, ending up in tall sage growth at the edge of the river 400 feet below and over ¼-mile away from the perch it left. The other young didn't care to fly, and pictures were taken as close as 1' away. I captured and banded this young (#34-632488). size 7b. One freshly killed young jack rabbit, still warm, was found about 20 feet from the young. Nearly perched on rock outcrops had many pellets scattered about, indicating that cottontail and jack rabbits make up a good share of the adult's food in this area. I gave the young rabbit to the remaining young hawk, but it payed no attention to it. Young had rich, plain tawny brown area on chest, and was heavily blotched below with dark brown. Flicker Rocky Mountain Williamson Sapsucker - pair had nest in tall alder near Twin Bridges at a height of about 28' on the north side of the tree. Western Kingbirds Ash-throated Flycatcher Rough-winged Swallows common Barn Swallows rare Cliff Swallows - 63 nest in small, open shed at 8' to 12'. Found 107 dead young in all growth stages on the floor of dirt. 57 of these were live ones. Some nests may h ave been torn down.
