July 6, 1947, Clackamas River, north of Oregon, 2:15 p.m. Anthony Green Heron - flew over the hiway, heading toward the Willamette R. July 12, 1947, MacDonald Forest, Peavy Cabin area, 8 - 11 a.m. Vulture - pair circling over the ridge together. Redtail Hawk - one flew low over the ridge-top, calling scream-like. Blue Grouse - flushed 6 immature birds from the edge of the road Mountain Quail - watched 4 ½-grown young walking along a log. They were brownish gray, with prominent head color bands as seen before. Band-tailed Pigeon - flushed 4 from a clump of fir and oak atop the ridge Rufous Hummingbird - watched one brilliant male feeding on St. John's Wort and Canada Thistle. Saw two pair at the same time in this vicinity. Flicker - several on snags and tall firs, and also feeding on the ground. Pileated Woodpecker - just one seen in deeper woods on D. Fir. Harris Woodpecker Gairdner Woodpecker Red-breasted Sapsucker - saw several individuals and then in one tree were 3 adults, 2 males, and 5 young birds, playing around with each other, and giving noisy calls as I have described previously. Western Flycatcher - one bird was being chased by a little Flycatcher which snapped its bill loudly at the Western. It was also chased by a Junco, and a Wren. Little Flycatcher - quite a few seen. One chasing a Western Flycatcher. Olive-sided Flycatcher - several calling from the taller trees Coast Jay - many in the area, some busy pecking on stumps and trees, others giving Red-tail call, and one being chased from a Western Tanager nest it may have been trying to rob. Long-tailed Jay - scolding from cleared brush area on SE slope way below ridge top. Oregon Chickadee - several moving in a flock of other species. Red-breasted Nuthatch - a few here and there with a flock of other species. California Creeper - several in with flock of other species. Seattle Wren - in brush area. Robin Russet-backed Thrush - singing here and there Hutton's Vireo - calling from oak-fir grove Audubon Warbler - several adults and immatures in with flock of other species. Hermit Warbler - in with flock of other species working firs and oaks Bullock's Oriole - one bird seen in Maple-oak area. W. Tanager - calling everywhere - one pair chasing a Coast Jay which may have been trying to rob their nest at 18' on the south side of a D. Fir. Purple Finch - a pair seen Willow Goldfinch - in cleared area, working on Canadian Thistle and Yarrow Towhee - one pair seen Junco - common throughout the areas White-crowned Sparrows - nesting in open area at base of Maple clump in Briar tangle. Song Sparrows common and singing. July 13, 1947, Middle Santiam River, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Valley Quail - flew ahead of the car, and crossed over ahead of us at 40& m.p.h. Spotted Sandpiper - several seen on various stretches of the river, all on bars. Rufous Hummingbird nest in huckleberry bush growing on perpendicular, N-slope cliff at 20 feet above the river. Kingfisher - one repeatedly flew by up or down in front of our picnic area. Roughwinged Swallows - here and there on the river area. Russet-backed Thrush- heard in the brush along the river. Willow Goldfinch - flew alongside the car, in open area at 23& m.p.h. July 14, 1947, Salem, 11 a.m. Anthony's Green Heron - nest along one branch of mill race at 23' in oak tree in center of town.
