June 18, 1949, Lake Washington, Yolo Co., W of Sacramento, 730-78 a.m. Swainson Hawk perched on ground in recently-cut alfalfa field where it captured a 50" gopher snake. When I walked out to flush it, it carried the wreathing snake away. It lit 120 yards away, and when I flushed it again, Bre wer Blackbirds pursued it 100 yards, while it still held on to the snake. It's flight was never over 6' above the fields. Marsh Hawk male Pheasants - several adult males and females seen. 3 3/4-grown, and 3 1/3-½-grown young seen. Monterey Red-shafted Flicker Barn Swallow - 4 Cliff Swallows - 25 W. Crows - a few Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wren Yellowthroats singing Yellow-headed Blackbirds - about 20 Calif. Bicolor Redwings - as before, there were a couple of small groups of 25-30 unattached males in the area, besides the nesting pairs. Song Sparrows singing.
