May 21, 1949, Monterey, and north of Monterey, Monterey Co. 930 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Carmel to Point Sur, Monterey Co. Brown Pelicans fling or on off-shore rocks Farallon Cormorants - very few Baird Cormorants common - 3 nests on ledge 30' uo from head of quiet bay. Nests 3 feet apart. Nests built up with plant material, and adults on nest. Much excreta. Cliff swallow nests within 3 feet(many cup-shaped instead of gourds). Surf Scoters - 1 south of Pt. Sur. Vultures - several W. Red-tailed Hawk - several pairs - flushed one second-year bird from the ground. It's "crop" was full and bulging - we found the rear 1/3 of a gopher snake near Malpaso Creek. Duck Hawk - pair had nest on south side of 250' cliff, but we never found it. The female was larger and lower toned in color and voice. Sparrow Hawks - pair chasing red-tails Valley Quail - 2 different birds calling at 430 p.m. from Monterey Pine woodland. Black Oystercatchers - up to 6 in a flock on offshore rocks. Killdeer - a few, more inland Western Sandpipers - pair seen. Avocets - 2 at mouth of Salinas River. Red Phalarope - several seen with Northern Phalaropes on ocean in kelp beds with the Sea Otters. Most in winter plumage. In the late afternoon I saw 1 full adult working in slimy, shallow pond with Northern (145-150), north of Monterey. Northern Phalaropes - some still in winter plumage, on the ocean among the kelpbeds near the sea otters. Some still in winter plumage. Associated with the Red Phalaropes. North of Monterey we saw about 150 in a slimy, shallow pond about 6 p.m. Glaucous-winged Gull - 1 seen Western Gull Herring Gull California Gull Short-billed Gull - 3 seen Pigeon Guillemot - several seen feeding in deep water of sheltered coves in rocky headlands. Band-tailed Pigeons around Monterey pine forests Mourning Doves just north of Pt. Reyes. Pacific Horned Owl - found many pellets in fairly dense Monterey Pine thicket south of Pt. Lobos. Vaux Swift - half-dozen seen in river canyons. White throated Swifts - dozens over sea cliffs - nest cavity in south side of 250' sea cliff near the Duck Hawk nest that we couldn't find. Belted Kingfishers Monterey Red-shafted Flicker -calling from Monterey pine woodland. California Woodpecker - in Monterey Cabanis Hairy Woodpecker - in Monterey pine woodland Black Phoebe - Wood Pewee - no eye ring. Catching insects from 9' perch in Monterey Pine Woodland. Western Flycatcher - Nest containing 4 fully feathered young at 45" in twig debris in dead branches of Monterey Pine in a rather dense thicket. Rim of nest inclined to E. Banded young with nos. 41-23849-50, and 42-3901-2 (size O). Young had most of feathers and wing bars were a chestnut-buff. Adults had black irides, and whitish wing bars and a pale eye ring. Olive bakc, yellow-green below and on the throat. About 6" long. Pair bold, carried crane fly and 2 moths to young while we watched. Flicked tail upward irregularly. Nest cavity 1 1/4" deep and 2 1/2" diameter. Horned Larks on ocean cliff grassland, singing. Violet-green Swallows Barn Swallows Cliff Swallows - common. Nests on over-hanging cliff within 3 feet of 3 Baird Cormorant nests. Some of nest were gourd shape, others just cups or saucers.
