American Egrets Blue Herons Mallards - 300& Cinnamon Teal - 20-30 Western Red-tailed Hawk Marsh Hawk female Pheasants - M & F Coots - 150 Black-necked Stilts - pair feeding in rice paddy Northern Phalarope - 1 feeding in rice paddy. Ruddy patch on side of neck, but plumage was matted. Bonaparte Gull - immature Common Terns - at least 30 seen. Have a drawn-out buzzz call they give while flying. Black Terns over reservoir and rice paddies Ruddy Horned larks very common. Some singing this p.m. Barn Swallows Cliff Swallows California Shrikes Western Meadowlarks California Bicolor Redwings - Found two nests in willows outside center of Brewer Blackbird nesting "colony" . #1 nest on east side of slim willow at 8 feet. Had #/p orange-skinned young, that had down tufts on spine, head, and wings. Eyes barely open. Banded the two larger ones. #40-250401 and 40-250427. #2 nest at 10' in willow. 4 eggs. ##3 & 4 - 2 fresh nests near to these two nests (6 feet away), but no eggs yet. Brewer Blackbirds - small nesting colony found at end of peninsula in scattered willows near the high water line. Grass hillsides around the area. I found that one pair had the following two nests, which were in isolated trees about 17 feet apart (by pacing). #1 - Nest cup 3 1/2" deep, rim 6 1/2' above ground. 2 freshly hatched young, and 3 eggs were in this nest. Bright orange skin. Horsehair-lined. #2 - Nest cup 3" deep, rim at 7' above ground. 5 nearly fully-feathered young in this nest. Parents were busy feeding them. Largest young was nearly 4 inches long, and the smallest 2 3/4" long. It looks as if all these young will leave the nest. Primaries were 2" long, the tail up to 3/4", and the young all had brownish eyes. Banded with #'s 41-152107,8,9,10, and 11. Horsehair lines. Other nests nearby were as follows: All horsehair lined. #3 - at 7' in willow. Sheltered. 2 eggs and 3 young with primaries over 1/2" long, but still sheathed. Mostly downy. #'s 41-152112,3,and 4. #4 - an old nest (at least last year's) on east side of willow at 9'. Two young, well-feathered. (#'s 41-15216 and 20) #5 - another old nest just 3 1/2-4 feet apart from #4 contained 2 well-feathered young, much the same as in #2 and #4. #'s 41-152115, and 19. #6 - nest a 9 1/2 feet in willow, on NW side. 2 orange-skinned young. Primaries still sheathed. Tail about 1/16" long. #'s 41-152118 and 21.
