June 30, 1947, MacDonald Forest, Saddle Area, 8 to 1130 a.m. Clear and warm. Vulture - 2 soared over. Band-tailed Pigeons - #4 were flushed from the top of a D. Fir Rufous Hummingbird - one female seen. Flicker - heard one. Harris Woodpecker - one seen. Wood Pewee Olive-sided Flycatcher Ravens - Gray Jay - a pair of adults and at least 3 young on a NW slope, in fairly heavy timber. Coast Jays - several heard and seen. Oregon Chickadees - several adults and immatures seen. Red-breasted Nuthatches heard everywhere - some may have been young. California Creeper - just one seen working a young D. Fir. Robin - a few seen and heard. Russet-backed Thrush - several heard, one singing, and one seen. Cassin's Vireo - heard a couple, and saw one pair chasing each other. Lutescent Warbler - singing quite a bit, most of the morning. Yellow Warbler - thought I heard a couple, altho I did not see any. Hermit Warblers - several pairs were observed feeding in the firs, and they kept up a continual conversation while in the area. No young were seen. MacGillivray's Warbler - along road down from the saddle, a pair had a nest in a Oak, at 4 feet, on a SW slope, in area of thick undergrowth cover. One parent scolded all the time I was near the nest. 3 eggs in the nest. Pileolated Warbler - saw a few, and they were singing most of the morning. Western Tanager - calling now and then, most of the a.m. Black-headed Grosbeak - had a nest in a tall oak, on the north side of a clump of fir, at 25 feet. I could not get to the nest. Juncos - quite a few pair scattered throughout the forest slopes, in open and closed areas July 2, 1947. Sulphur Springs, MacDonald Forest, 730-830 a.m. Mourning Dove Rufous Hummingbird - on cleared off hillside, in brush area. Flicker heard Pileated Woodpecker - busily working over the dead top of a 6' dia. fir tree. Little Flycatcher - a few Wood Pewee - heard some Olive-sided Flycatcher - perched atop a tall dead fir, calling frequently. Red-breasted Nuthatch - in the fir timber. Seattle Wren Robin Russet-backed Thrush - plentiful Cedar Waxwings heard Warbler Vireo - a few seen in the brush. Yellow Warbler Pileolated Warbler Western Tanagers calling continuously Evening Grosbeaks flew over Towhee Junco and Song Sparrows July 2, 1947, MacDonald Forest, Summit, and east boundary on Lewisburg road. 930-11 a.m. Band-tailed Pigeon - nest at 60 feet in D. Fir on NW side. ) Gray Jay - a few heard and one see n. ) at summit. Hermit Warblers - heard and seen. 3 males seen. ) At Boundary: Mourning Doves Slender-billed Nuthatch in macrone-oak area. Robin Hutton Vireo - calling from oak-fir area on SE slope. Long-tailed Chat - calling from Poison Oak-madrone hillside Black-headed Grosbeak in gravel at edge of road - getting grit??
