BEAVER POND AREA CONTINUE April 30, 49 Black-throated Gray Warbler - Heard singing often on. Townsend's Warbler - singing, several, from grand fir clump. MacGillivray's Warbler - along edge of maple west of quarry. Yellowthroat - singing along stream bottom, cattail marsh. Pileated Warbler - singing from vine maple between logged off area and stream bottom. XXXX on both sides of stream bottom. W. Meadowlark - ground quarry and north of beaver pond. Red-wing - Cattail Marsh and Beaver Pond. Western Tanager - fit-a-dick calling from fir. My first this year. Black-headed Grosbeak - one I [illegible] calling from vine maple. Watched another sing from oak at edge of oak woodland northwest of Beaver Pond. My first this year. Evening Grosbeak - Flock flew over beaver pond. Purple Finch - singing from first. Heard several times. Pine Siskin - over grand fir. Goldfinch (willow), Flying over bottoms. Crossbill - Flock of 15 working over logged off area. In scattered firs that were left. Ore. Towhee - in brush west of quarry. Vesper Sparrow - in field north of beaver pond. Ore. Junco - at edge of fir east of pond. Chipping Sparrow - in fields and oak northwest of beaver pond. Savannah Sparrow - along road south of quarry. White-crowned Sparrow " " " " " " Song Sparrow - young still in nest at quarry. McFADDEN'S SWAMP, 1 mile west of BRUCE, BENTON CO., ORE. April 30, 1949 9:25am to 2:30pm. Weather - Raining. Temp about 50 Water Level - 4. Blue Heron - two around swamp Bittern - One flew over road at bridge while we were eating lunch. Canada Goose - In the time we were at the swamp there was noted nine flocks of geese migrating. They came over throughout the time we were present. Flocks composed of following numbers: 25, 200, 800, 250, 300, 120, 250, 60, 50. Total: 2065. None of these birds stopped. There were, however, 7 canadas at the far south end of the swamp. Snow Goose ?, Am puzzled about this one. Don't know for sure if it was a snow goose, large white goose, pink bill, wings gray, frayed and in a very beat up condition. Looked as though they might have been clipped. Bird could fly however. This bird looked a little large for a snow goose, constantly gave a high pitched honk. XXX would allow me to get up to about 300 feet of him. Was it a snow goose immature going into adult plumage or something that escaped from someone's barn-yard. Mallard - Around 150 still at the swamp. Pintail - Saw one male. Green-winged Teal - Small flocks scattered over the swamp. The pop. probably totaled about 75. Shoveller - one male seen. Wood Duck - a couple of pairs seen. Turkey Vulture - one at south end of swamp. Ring-necked Pheasant - 2 cocks and 1 hen, field east of swamp next page
