Trip for Natural History Club's annual bird count. April 30, 1949 4:30am to 9:15am Weather - Freezing and some fog at start. High fog later, leading to rain about 10:00am. Pied-billed Grebe - Saw one on Beaver Pond. Gives very loud coo-coo like notes. Blue Heron - Flushed one from stream bottom above pond. Mallard - Saw two fly past rock quarry at 4:30am. Wood Duck - Two males and two females together playing about in fog on Beaver Pond about 5:00am. They didn't pay any attention to me. Red-tail Pair over logged off area. Sooty Grouse - hooting . Only heard one. Ruffed Grouse - Drumming all along ash-willow-alder-cottonwood stream bottom along creek. Flushed two. Ring-necked Pheasant - wherever fields were present. Wilson's Snipe - Winnowing over the cattail marsh. Band-tailed Pigeon - About 15 perched in oak at quarry? Mourning Dove - at quarry. Horned Owl - Hooting at 5:20am from oak hillside northwest of Beaver pond. Vaux Sift - Three flying about with swallows at cat-tail marsh. Rufous Hummingbird - in vine maple at edge of creek bottom. Pileated Woodpecker - Saw one fly over the creek bottom and lite in a fir. Red-breasted Sapsucker - Pair around snag in logged off area. Same place as yesterday. Harris Woodpecker - In logged off area. Gairdner Woodpecker - along creek bottom. Traill's Flycatcher - First heard one at edge of logged off area in brush along stream bottom. Later got one just west of Beaver Pond. My first this year. Western Flycatcher - First heard one at edge of stream bottom in firs. Later saw one at edge of fir about 1 mile west of Beaver pond. Horned Lark - Singing around quarry. Violet-Green Swallow - over Beaver Pond. Tree Swallow - Beaver Pond and cattail marsh. Cliff Swallow - Several hundred over cat-tail marsh. Steller's Jay - at edge of logged off area. Crow - several around quarry. Oregon Chickadee - Along stream bottom and in willow west of quarry. Chestnut-backed Chickadee - At edge of logeed off area. Red-breasted Nuthatch - one yanking. House Wren - Colony in logged off area. Winter Wren - one singing. Seatttel Wren - along stream bottom. Robin - near quarry. Cassin's Vireo - singing everywhere. Warbling Vireo - One singing from creek bottomland. First one this yr Lutescent Warbler - lots of them. Yellow Warbler - singing around Beaver Pond and Cat-tail marsh.
