Fred BEAVER POND AREA, 3 miles west of BRUCE, BENTON CO., ORR. April 29, 1949 11:00am to 2:30pm With Bob Storm Weather - Broken clouds. Pied-billed Grebe - calling on beaver pond. Wood Duck - pair on pond. Turkey Vulture - Was eating fish sandwich when about 6 vultures suddenly appeared. They circled around us and left. Red-tail - pair over logged off land northwest of pond. Sooty Grouse - hooting. Ruffed Grouse - Didn't know I had been hearing ruffed grouse drum- ing out here right along. Had always thought it was tractor or donkey engine in the distance. Storm called me attention to it. Ring-necked Pheasant - around the rock quarry. Band-tailed Pigeon - around the rock quarry. Vaux Swift - First saw them over the logged off area. Then near the rock quarry. Red-breasted Sapsucker - pair in logged off area around old snag. might have a nest there. Horned Lark - near the rock quarry in the fields. Violet-Green Swallows Tree Swallow Cliff Swallow - By far the most numerous swallow. Around 100 over Beaver Pond. Purple Martin - Heard near Beaver pond. Steller's Jay - calling. Crow - several in fields around rock quarry. Ore. Chickadee - in ash along creek. Chestnut-backed Chickadee - at edge of logged off area. Bushtit - Near beaver pond. Pair Red-breasted Mathatch - yanking from timber. House Wren - Singing in logged off area. Seattle Wren - in a sh along creek. Hutton's Vireo - heard at edge of logged off area. Cassin's Vireo - singing at various locations. Lutescent Warbler - " " " " Yellow Warbler - Singing around Beaver pond. Still haven't heard any yellow warblers anywhere but here. Storm says he saw one in town the other day however. Black-throated Gray Warbler - singing in fir. Townsend's Warbler - in grand fir at age of logged off land. MacGillivray Warbler - in brush at edge of maples near quarry. Yellow-throat Pileolated Warbler - In vine maple at edge of logged off area. W. Meadowlark - in fields around quarry. Red-wing - at beaver pond. Purple Finch - singing. Pine Siskin - in first overhead. Oser Towhee Vesper Sparrow - in fields north of beaver pond. Chipping Sparrow " " " " " Song Sparrow - three young in nest in rose bush at quarry. Young appear about ready to leave nest.
