BEAVER POND AREA, 3 miles west of BRUCE, BENTON CO., OREGON April 26, 1949 2:00 to 3:20pm Weather - clear and warm With Doc Gordon Mallard - one pair flushed at southeast corner of pond along with a pair of Wood Ducks Rinc-necked Pheasant - around the rock quarry area. Mourning Dove - cooing at rock quarry. Oregon Chickadee - near rock quarry. Bushtit - on way into pond. pair working over brush. Cassin's Vireo - singing. Orange-crowned Warbler - singing here and there. Yellow Warbler - A couple singing around the beaver pond several songs. Doc Gordon squeeked one within view. This bird still hasn't reached the campus. Haven't seen it anywhere but here. Black-throated Gray Warbler - saw one in the fir and brush. Pileolated Warbler - Doc squeeked one of these in sight. It was not heard singing. In willow at beaver pond. Western Meadowlark - around the rock quarry. Red-wing - pair at beaver pond. Evening Grosbeak - near beaver pond. Ore. Towhee Vesper Sparrow - around the quarry. Song Sparrow The beaver pond is about 3 miles west of Bruce, and about 1/4 mile west of the rock quarry. It is southwest of the cattail marsh, on the Failing estate. On the south side it is boardered with oak-fir woods, on the north side by cultivated fields and on the east and west sides by ash and swampy creek area. The pond is deep so that very little vegitation grows XXXXXXXhit, and then only at the edges. It appears to have been man built, and a high dam now grown over with WILXXXX willow and blackberry holds up the water about 8 feet above the creek flowing from it. The pond is about 1/2 acre in area. Its east boarder consists of the dam. The dam is supplemented by a high beaver dam at XXXXXXXXXXXX the south-east corner. Quite a few willows boarder the pond. Some spike rush is present. In the creek bottm feeding it is sedge and spirea along with the ash.
