April 24, 1949, Franklin Ranch Sloughs, E of Cortland, Sacramento Co. 1200-1430. White Pelicans - 3 in area - 1 with breeding "horn" Farallon Cormorants - 2 Blue Herons - 25 American Egrets - 30 Snowy Egret - 1 Bittern - 1 Black-crowned Night Heron - 2 Mallards - about 10, paired. Vulture Swainson Hawk - pair with newly constructed nest in willow about 25' over slough. Marsh Hawk Sparrow Hawk Valley Quail Pheasants Virginia Rail - 1 heard Coots - about 75 seen Gallimule - 2 Killdeer Red-backed Sandpipers - 5 Ring-billed Gulls - 3 Caspian Tern - 1 over main slough. large, shallow-forked tail, red bill Mourning Doves Kingfisher Monterey Red-shafted Flicker Willow Dawn Woodpecker - nest in 14' cottonwood snag at 11' on SW side. Nuttall Woodpecker - 4 seen Western Kingbird - 2 Black Phoebe Ash-throated Flycatchers - 2 pair - I "chatted" with them and brought them in close. They were along railroad, in willows and cottonwoods bordering the sloughs. Violet-green Swallows Tree Swallows nesting at varying heights in willow snags. Rough-winged Swallows Barn Swallows Cliff Swallows Interior California Jays Western Crows - several pairs. One nest at 20' in unleafed willow, near slough. Bird on the nest ?? Bush Tits - quite rusty-headed San Joaquin Bewick Wren Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wren Robin California Shrike Audubon Warbler Yellow Warbler Pacific Yellowthroats W. Meadowlarks Calif.
