HILL WEST OF MCFADDEN'S CONTINUED APR 16, 49 Audubon Warbler - singing. Black-throated Gray Warbler - in fir. Heard singing in several lo- cations. Townsend's Warbler - A beautiful male working over a maple. Also singing. MacGillivray's Warbler - Saw a male at edge of maple and fir. Later sang. Appeared when I gave a screech owl call. First this year. Evening Grosbeak - flock Flock of about 10. Think they are working the maples. Purple Finch - Singing several different locations. Pine Siskin - small flock. Ore. Towhee - in brush south side of hill. Junco - Pair at edge of fir and maple. MCFADDEN'S SWAMP, in addition to 9 to 10am trip. At 1:30pm April 16, 1949 White-fronted Goose - Same place again and again seen at 5:00. Shoveller - one male seen. Hooded Merganser - one adult male and one in female plumage together at west edge of main pond near the bridge. Watched this pair for several minutes. Cassin's Vireo - singing along creek. HILL 2 MILES WEST OF MCFADDEN'S SWAMP or about 3 miles west of BRUCE April 16, 1949 2:45 to 5:00 pm. Weather - clear. Temp. 70. Trip consisted of walk in search of herpetological specimens and hab- itat. Started at abandoned farm house and proceeded north over the hill which runs in a east west direction north of the road. The north side of this hill covered with dense growth of fir and maple. At bottom is a creek surrounded by beaver ponds, and skunk cabbage bogs with many springs. Vegetation around this bog besides skunk cabbage is sedge, alder, ash, a little cottonwood. Bog runs along the creek. This creek feeds the swamp which lies about a mile west of McFadden's swamp. Walked down the creek about a mile. Then turned to the south back up- hill to the top of a oak topped hillside and back to car. Turkey Vulture - several circling over the creek. Red-tail - one flew out of a high fir. Sooty Grouse - hooting here and there. Ruffed Grouse - Flushed one along the creek. Ring-necked Pheasant - in fields along the road. Mourning Dove - Cooing on open hillside Pileated Woodpecker - one rattled. Gairdner Woodpecker - one rattled from ash along creek. Steller's Jay - saw one in fir. Oalif. Jay - one called from oak thicket. Ore. Chickadee - calling from maple covered hillside. Red-breasted Nuthatch - yanking. Winter Wren - singing from dense fir-maple woods. Seattell Wren - in the bog in ash. Golden-crowned Kinglet Hutton Vireo - singing at edge of fir Cassin's Vireo - singing. Iutescent Warbler - lots of them. in rose too.
