McFADDEN'S SWAMP, CORVALLIS, BENTON CO., OREGON April 16, 1949 9:00 to 10:00 am. Weather - high fog, temp 60 Water level - 4. Hasn't rained for about 2 weeks. XXXXXXXX Viewed north side only from road. Walked south end. Blue Heron - two in main pond. Canada Goose - About 5 flew down Muddy Cr. White-fronted Goose - 5 of them in the water south of the west bridge. Finally flew off to the south. Mallard - About 100 Pintail - about 25 Green-winged Teal - About 30, scattered in small flocks. Wood Duck - one or two pairs. Turkey Vulture - 15 of them perched together in the tall ash about 500 feet south of the road in the swamp. Got quiet close to them before they took off. Ring-necked Pheasant Coot - saw only 1 south of the west bridge. Killdeer - one IK along far south pond. Wilson Snipe - Scattered individuals around the far south pond. Greater Yellow-legs - They were all over the swamp. We saw around 50. How many were at the north end that we didn't see is any-one's guess. Violet-Green Swallow Tree Swallows Crow Robin - several in ash south of the barn. Yellow-throats - around 4 males singing. Red-sings White-crowned Sparrow - small flock XXXXXXXXXX of white-crowns and goldenCcrowns in rose XXE south of the barn. Golden-crowned Sparrow - as above Song Sparow Fir-Maple HILLSIDE 3 miles WEST OF McFADDEN'S SWAMP April 16, 1949 10:30 to 11:30am Weather as above Red-tail - one circling north side of hills Sooty Grouse - hooting Flicker - pair courting. Pileated Woodpecker - rattled. Steller's Jay - called Chest-nut-backed Chickadee - Small flock in north side of hill in maples ALKEXWAIIMXMXARLIERS where most of the warblers were listed below. Red-breasted Nuthatch - same place. House - Wren - 2 or 3 singing on hillside mentioned above. Hillside is rather open. Maples are scattered. Fir logged off some time ago. Golden-crowned Kinglet - same place, calling. Hutton's Vireo - singing same place. EXAEXXXXXXAXMXMXXPX Where fir and maple met. Lutescent Warbler - Saw several at this location, but heard others at scattered locations. See next page.
