Bicolor Redwings Brewer Blackbirds Vesper Sparrows Puget Sound White-crowned Sparrows. Sacramento River along west side just below Sacramento - 0950-1005 Short-billed Gulls - about 300 in freshly-plowed field. Others seen in other fields. Tree Swallows Audubon Warblers House Wren - pair, one carrying nesting material Pine Siskins W. Mockingbird Common Goldfinches March 26, 1949, Sacramento River along E side, vicinity of Knights Ferry. 1250-1530. Clear, calm, and warm. Common Egrets Whistling Swans - 17 in field by pool Mallards - 3 Vultures - 4 Sparrow Hawk Pheasants - few cocks, but at least 75 others Mourning Doves Monterey Red-shafted Flickers common California Woodpeckers - 3 Nuttall's Woodpecker common - saw at least 6 at one time, and several others. They were working primarily on cottonwood and willow trunks, and several were observed feeding in the top-most branches on the buds of the cottonwoods, which have not yet opened. Communicated with each other, too. Black Phoebe Tree Swallows - at least 350-500 per mile of river bank. They are paired, or pairing, and many have selected nest sites in snag limbs of cottonwoods and willows. All were very noisy this afternoon. Barn Swallows - few Interior California Jays - very common everywhere Yellow-billed Magpies even more abundant than the Jays. Many old nests were observed in tall Populus fremontii at heights from 40 feet to 75 or 80.
