Woodpeckers abundant Violet-green swallows Tree swallows Rough-winged Swallows along Friant-Kern Canal W. Mockingbird Varied Thrush in oak-willow bottomlands. March 22, 1949, Pine Flat Dam Site up Kings R to Trimmer and over pass to Tollhouse, Fresno Co. 1500-1545. Buckeye, manzanita, digger pine, blue oak, buck- Valley Quail about only bird. brush, and sycamore, principally. March 22, 1949, Friant Dam, Madera-Fresno County lines, at dam site only: Blue Heron Lesser scaups - 60& Coots - 30 Purple Finches March 22, 1949, Kerckhoff Reservoir, upstream from Friant, on San Joaquin River, on Madera-Fresno Co. lines. Heavy rain at time of visit. Lesser scaups - 6 Ruddy ducks - 5 Slopes with thin stand of digger pine, and understory Stellar jays brush of manzanita, buckeye, buckbrush, divaricate California jays. buckbrush, yerba santa, and at the reservoir edge were willow, alder, hazel, cattail, and sedges. March 24, 1949, Sacramento Signal Depot. 8 a.m. Pipits on lawn. March 25, 1949 - Sacramento - 730 a.m. Cedar Waxwings in elms. March 25, 1949 - Mills-Fair Oaks, Sacramento Co. 1630-1730. W. Redtailed Hawks Marsh Hawks - 4 or 5 pairs over the gravel-barrens. Watched one female or immature male doing loop dives of decreasing height, with complete wing-over at top of loop. Duck Hawk - one "playing around" with redtailed hawk. Mourning Doves Monterey Red-shafted Flicker Willow Downy Woodpecker Interior California Jay Western Robins Western Meadowlarks - common everywhere, and I flushed one flock of over 300 birds. California Bicolor Redwings Brewer Blackbirds House Finches singing Sacramento Brown Towhee Puget Sound White-crowned Sparrows Golden-crowned Sparrows - flock of 25-30 Modesto Song Sparrow
