March 19, 1949 Yolo By-pass, Yolo County, just W of Sacramento. 715-720 a.m. RW- White-Pelicans - 35 Blue Heron - 5 American Egrets - 75 Canada Geese ssp - 4-5,000 White-fronted Geese - 2,000 Baldpates - 8,000 Pintails - 800 Coots - 5,000 Ring-billed Gulls - 50 Fred G. Evenden, Jr. The by-pass waters have flooded much grain-land, and the ducks and geese are making the most of it. 1103 March 19, 1949 - California State Hiway 48, NW of Vallejo, Solano Co. 0825-0830. Horned Grebe Pied-billed Grebes Blue Heron American Egrets Shovellers Canvasbacks - common Ruddy ducks Marsh Hawk M Coots Black-bellied Ploves - 4 seen. Hudsonian Curlews Long-billed Curlews - Willetts Western Sandpipers Red-backed Sandpipers Least Sandpipers Avocets - feeding with side-swipe forward motion. Western Crows Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wrens San Francisco Red-winged Blackbird Brewer Blackbirds Samuels Song Sparrow - M. m. samuelis RW- 50vc. The north shore of San Pablo Bay south of route 48 was literally black with shorebirds, but they were so far from me that their identity could not be determined.
