June 19, 1947, S. Spur, MacDonald Forest, 1215-430 p.m., 5 Brkn (W), cool. Vulture - one seen circling over. Wood Pewee- heard Olive-sided Flycatcher - calling frequently from a tall D. Fir in the area. Gray Jay - I watched a family group of 6 birds working thru the upper branches of the D. Fir on the north slope of the hill I was on. The gun-metal coloration of the 3/4 grown young was distinctive, as well as the lack of head markings. The birds had a whistle-like note they gave every once in a while. They acted very restless, and more or less "leaped-frogged" over each other from tree to tree, seldom beating their wings, but just sailing to the next tree, and then hopping from limb to limb, upward, before casting off again. Coast Jay - 5 or 6 of them were in the area, in some of the same D. Firs just before the Gray Jays came thru. Oregon Chickadees - small groups seen Chestnut-backed Chickadees - some of them seen. Red-breasted Nuthatch - a few heard. California Creeper - one pair seen working Hemlock and D. Fir trunks. Hermit Thrush - same just one bird - no call notes were given. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - in small groups in the firs. Golden-crowned Kinglets - in small groups inthe firs. Calling continuously. Hutton Vireo - a few were calling from the upper limbs of the tres. Yellow Warbler - quite a few in the area. Audubon Warbler - several in the firs. Hermit Warbler - saw three of them in tall and small firs. Colorful. Pileolated Warbler - two seen. Western Tanagers - plentiful in the area, and calling frequently. Evening Grosbeaks - watched a pair feeding in the fir tops, and otherpairs flew over. Junco - quite a few pair scattered thru the forests.
