McFADDEN'S SWAMP, CORVALLIS, BENTON CO., ORE.
March 6, 1949 9:20 am to 11:30 am.
Weather - fog about 100 feet up. Temp. 45.
Water Level - 6". Northfield with isolated puddles and damp ground.
Area covered - Walked along east edge of main pond and halfway up
east edge of north [illegible] field. Then went up [illegible] between
Muddy Cr. and swamp on south side of road to long penninsula
extending out into creek.
Vegetation - Elecharis [illegible] up several inches. Lots of fresh
shoots of Polygonum.
Canada Goose - Only saw about 300, but know lots more were present
as we could hear them on [illegible] around the large south pond [illegible]
which we did not look at.
Mallard - At least 1,000, mostly on north field and paired up. Most
mallards I can remember seeing at the swamp.
Pintail - About 80, mostly males.
Green-winged Teal - Over 1,000, mostly in north field.
Shoveller - 5 males and 2 females.
Red-tail - One in ash by north field.
Ring-necked Pheasant - one cock.
Coot - Only 50 seen. Seemed more scattered than usual.
Flicker - one.
Violet-Green Swallow - First this year. About 20 circling over
main pond. Might have been some tree swallows with them, but
could only identify Violet-Green fore sure.
Crow - Heard some dawing.
Oregon Chickadee - Heard small flock.
Seattle Wren - one singing.
Tule Wren - one singing.
Robin - About 50 along fencercow on east side of main pond, and bout
50 more between Muddy Cr. and swamp south of road.
Varied - Thrush - One singing with the latter robins.
Golden-crowned [illegible] Kinglet - small flock in ash along Muddy Cr.
Audubon Warbler - 20 working over Spirea and Carex along main pond.
Western Meadowlark - one singing along fencercow with first bunch of
robins.
Red-wing - A few here and there around main pond.
Crossbill - Bet this is a new one for the swamp. Small flock flew
over.
Oregon Towhee - one along Muddy Cr.
Junco - small flock along Muddy Cr.
Song Sparrow - ( 9 seen or heard.
