TOLEDO, LINCOLN CO., OREGON Along highway 20. February 26, 1949 9:00 am to 10:00 am Weather : Clear With class in Management of Game birds. Mallard - Two flocks just west of Toledo along marshy stream bottoms. One of the flocks about 25 and other 10. Gadwall - One seen in with flock of mallards and baldpate. European Widgeon - One bright colored male in with flock of about 50 baldpates west of Toledo. Brick red head showed up well. Was along marshy stream bottom with flooded fields and green green grass banks. This bird, which McAllister spotted, was under our observation for about 15 minutes. Baldpate - Flock of 50 noted above. One flock of about 30 and ano- thor of 60 seen further down the highway. Canvas-back - Flock of about 30 east of Toledo, and 13 others seen just west of Toledo. Scaup - 4 in pond,west of Toledo and 5 east of Toledo. Ruddy Duck - Jay Long spotted this one in wide spott of river east of Toledo. Coot - 6 Short-billed Gull - About 25 where Eu. Widgeon was. Song Sparrows YAGUINA BAY, LINCOLN CO., OREGON February 26, 1949 11:00 am to 3:00 pm (same trip as above) Weather: A few scattered clouds. A beautiful day and warm. Trip started at HERR docks at Newport and followed along bayshore to Oregon State College Fish Lab. Most of bayshore covered by automobile. About 1 mile traveled by foot. About 1/2 hour spent in boat in bay. Lesser Loon - Saw a total of about 7 loons, several of which HERR were of this species, if not all of them. Holboell's Grebe - A total of about 8 came within my view. They were individuals scattered about. Found one which was injured and which we picked up. Some of these birds showed a consid- erable amount of the reddish plumage coming in on the neck. Horned and/or Eared Grebe - I am almost sure of one being a horned, an individual which allowed HERR us to approach within about 6 feet of him. Watched this bird swim underwater. Its leg and foot motion reminded me of a human swimming under water. Saw other small grebes scattered loosely about. Western Grebe - 21 of them all lined up. Parallon Cormorant - Individuals here and there. Baird's Cormorant - Saw at least one, and there were probably others and perhaps some Brandt's. Blue Heron - One flying over. Black Brant - Flock of about 200 some distance out from shore. Canvasback - Saw perhaps 250, and probably missed others. Scaup - Saw one raft of about 175, and several small ones. Bufflehead - Perhaps 50. Maybe more. White-winged Sooter - Scattered in small flocks about bay with Surf sootere. Surf Sooter - see above. American Sooter - Saw one off the fishing docks. Two others near the lab.
