MCFADDEN'S SWAMP, 14 miles south of Corvallis, Benton Co., Oregon February 14XX194XK 15, 1949 14:00 to 16:30. Weather - windy with steady light rain. Temp 42. Conditions - Water level at road 12". North field under 18" of water. Area covered - Area north of road covered. Did no look at south end other than what could be seen from dike road. No ducks visible from road. All in north field. Canada Goose - 2,000 to 3,000 in the area at least. Snow Goose - Could have been Ross's if such were considered possible. Six flew over swamp from north and then turned around and headed back. Mallard - 700 to 1,000 in the northwest corner of the north field. Baldpate - Five feeding with geese in a field just north of the swamp area. Two more later seen in the north field. Pintail - About 100 seen. Could have been more. Green-winged Teal - About 150 in small scattered flocks. Red-tail - One flew over. Sparrow Hawk - one hovering and one at the RR tracks. Coot - not as many today. About X 75. Flicker - 1 Oregon Chickadees - in the ash on west side of north field. Robin - About 40 along fence row east side of main pond. Varied Thrush - 1 near same location. Audubon Warbler - About 10 in ash east of main pond. Red-wing - They came in about 3:30 this time. Song Sparrow - only 3. LONG TOM RIVER, BRIDGE BETWEEN SWAMP AND MONROE. February 15, 49 16:35. Just stopped for a minute. No birds visible from bridge to south, but small flock of divers north of bridge. Tried to sneak up on the divers, but they flushed with brush and trees between me and them so I didn't get an accurate count. Ring-necked Duck - Saw these last week here, and Merl Payne saw some on the 13th. This time saw flock of 10 which were probably of this species. Canvas-back - At least 30 of them. Scaup - Saw one.
