February 6, 1949, Gray Lodge Refuge, SW Butte Co., 1000[strike]14[/strike] - 1430, 5-80vc., R- With Gordon Gullion, Garth Cummings, Jiggs Davis, Bob Hicks S 15-30 of Richmond and San Leandro, Calif. Pied-billed Grebe - afew Farallon Cormorants Blue Herons - several Strong wind and driving rain made observing American Egrets - common very difficult, and birds didn't fly much. Snowy Egret - just 1 seen Black-crowned Night Herons - about 75[strike]0[/strike]-125 seen - adults and immatures. Wind kept down American Bitterns - several seen - 5-10 Whistling Swans - perhaps close to 6-700 seen scattered thru refuge area, tho other large flocks were seen outside the refuge in large open, flowea fields. They taxied off the water within 10 feet in this wind. Called often. Was tough flying, even for them. Common Canada Goose few seen Western Canada Goose 5-10[strike]0[/strike] seen Lesser Canada Goose about 50 seen Cackling Canada Goose most common - perhaps several hundred. White-fronted Goose - 25-30 Tule White-fronted Goose - about 10 seen, that we felt were certainly this subspecies. Lesser Snow Goose - about 2000 seen altogether Ross Goose - none identified for certain, tho they may have well been with the Snows. Mallards - 100's Gadwalls - 1 pair Baldpates - few females and no males seen Pintails - 100's Green-winged Teal - 100's Cinnamon Teal - perhaps 10 or so, males for sure. Shovellers - common - 100's Lesser Scaup - 1 Ruddy Ducks - a couple of 100, at least American Mergansers - perhaps 50-75 in area. Turkey Vultures - at least 10-12 in area. Plenty of food in dead ducks and geese(snows) Western Red-tailed Hawl - several Red-bellied Hawks - 2 seen. Coloration nice. Golden Eagle - 1 in tree Marsh Hawks very common, both adults and immatures. Duck Hawk - 1 seen Sparrow Hawks - a few Valley Quail - Pheasants - plentiful - adults and immatures Coots - 100-200 seen. Killdeer - a few Wilson Snipe - 1 Dowitcher - 7 Avocet - 1 with pintails Ring-billed [strike]Gulls[/strike] Gulls - several adults and immatures Band-tailed Pigeons - 100's Mourning Doves - a few Burrowing Owl - 1 in refuge manager's yard. Flickers very common Nuttall Woodpecker - Dendrocopos nuttallii - a female in a small willow - a life lister Black Phoebe Say Phoebe Sacramento Spotted Towhees Ruddy Horned Larks Western Lark Sparrows Western Crows common Gambel White-crowned Sparrows - common Interior California Jay Golden-crowned Sparrows Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wren - 1 seen, and 2 heard Western Robins Modesto Song Sparrows. 63 species American Pipits English Sparrows With the closing of the hunting season on Jan 8th, most W. Meadowlarks common waterfowl left the refuge + now feed + rest in California Bicolor Redwing farm fields, without returning to its refuge to rest! There Brewer Blackbirds were nowhere near the numbers today present January 8 & 1! The variety was than though 1071 1071
