Long Tom River, Feb. 1/49 (cont.) Willow Goldfinch - flock of 30 Audubon's Warbler - 2 Song Sparrows - 12 in brush along bankof river. Surprised a beaver cutting willow shoots out on top of the river bank; it immediately dove into a rose thicket on the bank and dissappeared. McFadden's Swamp - ice going fast; lots of open water. Feb. 1/49. 16:30 to 17:30. Whitling Swan - 10 birds, including two imm. feeding in open field 1/4 mi. south of McFadden's Swamp/ Farmer said they first appeared there Jan. 27, and had been there every day since. The first few days, this was during the freege, several l of the birds came up to his house and were so tame he attempted to approach them with a pan of grain. This farm is on the west side of Muddy Creek on the next road south of the swamp/ They were eating shoots of rye gress. Baldpate - flock of 100 grazing in the same fields with the swan. Mallard - about 1,000 birds flew into north end at dusk. Pintail - several hundred birds came in with mallards Green-winged Teal - small flocks at dusk Red-winged Blackbirds - flocks comaing in at dusk; a few males were singing when we first arrived.
