Band-tailed Pigeons - large flocks in the tops of oaks, and on the ground everywhere on plowed and stubble fields. In a strip about 1/4-mile wide on each side of the highway, we saw at least 2500 birds in 10 miles of road. Also noted that often the flocks were on the ground only under the scattered oaks. Warren Smith, the local warden has had to issue many permits to satisfy the ranchers who complain of their wrecking their crops.
