January 26, 1949, Keene-Mohave, over Tehachapi Pass, 0900-0930 a.m. Clear, cold Shallow snow on the ground Mohave Horned Larks Ravens - common in pairs Pipits in large flocks Meadowlarks - a few Calif. Purple Finches in flocks Lark Sparrows - scattered small groups Nevada Savannah Sparrows - few January 26, 1949, Sunset Beach-Huntington Beach, Orange Co. 445-5 p.m. Clear, Excellent tidal marshes and lagoons. Good birding ! Brown Pelicans - about 25 seen, few full adults American Egrets - few Lesser Scaups - many Ring-necked Ducks - few Ruddy Ducks - 50-75 Coots - common Hudsonian Curlews - several seen Marbled Godwits - common Yellowlegs, greater Western Sandpipers Red-backed Sandpipers Least Sandpipers Avocets - about 40 seen California Gulls Western Gulls Glaucous-winged Gulls - very few Common Terns - looked quite small.
