MCFADDEN'S SOUTH SWAMP, 15 miles south of CORVALLIS; BENTON CO. ORE. January 20, 1949 14:00 to 15:30 Temp 28 degrees. High overcast. Ground covered with a light sheet of snow or ice in most places. Most of water area in swamp covered with ice. Considerably more water open than last week, however. Water level 5" Whistling Swan - One of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. First saw four adults which came out from behind a sedge clump in the channel next to the island south of the road. They didn't see us at first, but soon took to the air, circling around behind us giving us a good view. Upon taking flight they uttered some notes similar to the honking a canada geese. We seen discover three others in the [illegible] behind some sedge and spirea in the big pond at the same location. These birds were pumping their heads and necks up and down as other waterfowl do in courting. Upon spotting us, these birds also took [illegible] to the air. I paced out the distance from [illegible] where we first saw the first group of swans to where they were lo- cated. It was only 200 feet. The second group was about the same distance from us. I have reason to belive that these were not the only swans on the swamp, because I later saw what I thought to be a young one from the road. It was in the sedges [illegible] southwest of the bridges. Gray plumage. Canada Goose - At least 2,000 in the area. Mallard - About 50 males and 10 females. Pintail 30, almost all males. Green-winged Teal - 3 Ruddy Duck - 2 Red-tail - One perched in an ash south of the bridge crossing the main channel. Ring-necked Pheasant - 3 in nearby field. Coot - About 200 Killdeer - one by the horse[illegible] shed. Seemed very weak and reluctant to fly. Didn't call. Flicker Ore. Chickadee - heard notes. Seattle Wren - 1 Varied Thrush - 1 in ash Pipit - 2 flew over. Audubon Warbler - one seen Oregon Towhee - 2 Golden-crowned Sparrow - four in the fence row south of the shed. Song Sparrow - Callyed [illegible] 15 altogether. 8 in one group. Visited area south of road. Most of pond north could be seen from the dike. HIGHWAY BETWEEN CORVALLIS AND SWAMP (same day) Bobwhite - Saw one pop in to the brush about halfway. Mourning Dove - Saw one at about the same point. Aleutian Savannah Sparrow - Picked up dead on the highway. Now in my collection. Identified by S.G. Jewett.
