MCFADDEN'S SWAMP, BENTON CO., OREGON, 13 miles S. of Corvallis January 11, 1949 14:00 to 15:30 Weather - Clear, Temp 28 degrees. Almost all of swamp frozen over except for SEVERAL SMXX main channel. We walked across the ice. Visited only north end of swamp. L.Canada goose - About 200 in a field just west of Muddy Cr. bridge. Mallard - About 8 males and two females present. Pintail - About 15, mostly males. Baldpate - one male seen Green-winged Teal - four was all. Ruddy Duck - First we saw one male in the main channel on the north side of the bridge, and then saw eight more ruddys south of the bridge. Some still showed some signs of red plumage. Sparrow Hawk - along the RR. tracks. Coot - About 200 present. Put on quite a show walking around on the ice. Flicker Audubon Warbler - head one. Golden-crowned Sparrow - Flock of about 7 where the road first turns at the swamp. Song Sparrow - saw only two. Moore of the state police says there were lots of ducks present on the swamp until the freeze came. January 25, 1949, Sacramento River along W side from Freeport-Sacramento - 315-330 p.m. Blue Heron Lesser Scaups - about 75 seen Redheads - 5 Canvasbacks - 2M and 4 F Buffleheads - 6 Ruddy Ducks - 25-30 Sparrow Hawks Coots - 20-25 Killdeer Wilson Snipe - 4 Ring-billed Gulls - 150 Calif. Gull - 35 Flickers - 4 Calif. Jay Calif. Bush-tits San Joaquin Bewick Wren Robins Ruby-crowned Kinglets California Shrike Audubon Warblers common - scattered W. Meadowlarks Brewer Blackbirds Calif. Purple Finches Golden-crowned Sparrows Modesto Song Sparrow January 25, 1949, Lake Washington, SW of West Sacramento, 345-4 p.m. Calm, clear, cool. Blue Herons Black-crowned Night Herons - 6or 7?in burned off Scirpus and Typha. Redheads - 25 Lesser Scaups - 50-60 Canvasbacks - 8-10 Buffleheads - 4 Ruddy Ducks - 40-50 Coots Killdeer California Gull Calif. Bicolor Redwing. Puget White-crowned Sparrows Modesto Song Sparrows
