January 8, 1949, Gray Lodge State Refuge, SW Butte Co. 930a.m.-3:30 p.m. 32-37°F. Clear N and NW 6-35 mph. Western Grebe - a few All waterfowl and others had a rough time Pied-billed Grebe - 250-400 flying today. White Pelican - 25 or so. Parallon Cormorant - about 75 Blue Heron - many Anthony's Green Heron - just 1 seen. Common Egret - several 100 in area. On way up I noted about 250 of these egrets perched on the bare earth of the west and north banks of the Sacramento River, whichever was exposed to the early morning sun. Blue herons, too. Snowy Egret - just a couple seen. Very uncommon Black-crowned Night Heron - just 50 or so seen. Big colony gone. Least Bittern - a couple flushed when refuge was "bombed" at 1315 PST. American Bittern - 3 seen. Whistling Swans - close to 1500 of them on the refuge. They were a beautiful sight flying against the strong winds. Many were calling. Common Canada Goose -750-1000 of them. Western Canada Goose - saw about 250 of them. Lesser Canada Goose - saw about [illegible]1000 of them. Cackling Canada Goose - about 7000 of them on the area. White-fronted Goose - about 1500 seen. Tule Goose - 3 or 4 of those seen appeared much larger than the rest, and were in areas of dead willow branches, etc. Could very well be this species. Lesser Snow Goose - About 25,000-35,000 adults and immatures in the area. Ross Goose - saw at least 700 of them. Several were cripples. Blue Goose - One adult[illegible] seen in small open area in tule growth in the SW part of the refuge, with Lesser Snows. This goose is very rare in the valley. Mallards - Baldpates - Radwalls - perhaps 150 seen, almost all wer e closely paired birds. Pintails - Cinnamon Teal - 3 or 4 - 1 full male. Green-winged Teal - 7-10,000 of them. Shovellers - Wood Ducks - just one male seen. Canvas-backed Duck - about 25 seen. Ring-necked Duck - 50 or so Redhead Duck - 20 or so. Lesser Scaup Ducks - about 250 present. Bufflehead - 1 full male, and about 50 females and immatures. Ruddy Duks - about 5000-7000 present. American Merganser - 15-20 seen. Turkey Vulture - one circling over range area just SE of the refuge at 930 a.m. White-tailed Kite - seldom beat wings in strong wind today. Cooper Hawk - 3 seen. Sharp-shinned Hawk - about 15 seen. Red-tailed Hawk - 4-5 Red-bellied Hawk - 2 Golden Eagle - 1 Marsh Hawk - about 50 on the area and adjacent lands. Sparrow Hawks - 25 or so. Pheasants - many on the refuge. Sandhill Cranes - 40-45 flew high over the refuge. Virginia Rails Sora Rails MA Black Gallimule - just 1 seen. Coots - 10,000-20,000 or more. Killdeer - 100 or so. Wilson Snipe Yellow Legs - flock of 15 or so. OVER OVER
