SMITH LAKE, NEAR MOUTH OF WILLAMETTE RIVER, MULTNOMAH CO., OR December 22, 1948 08:30 to 3:30 PM Weather: High ALMOS fog to clear in afternoon 32 Degree temp at start Trip consisted of walk around south side of lake to junction of Smith and Bybee Lakes, and return. Then by auto along east side of lake and by foot along north side of lake. The lake was almost completely covered. with Albert Marshall Horned or Eared Grebe - Saw one which could have been either of these two species. Pied-billed Grebe - Saw two along south shore and three on one of the north arms of the lake. Farallon Cormorant - One on a piling on the Columbia and one flying over at the same location. Blue Heron - Total of six for the day scattered. Mallard - Counted 1030 on the lake. These WERE helped make up the large flocks of ducks on the lake of which there were about six of 800 or over. Baldpate - Total of 2125. Most by far that I have ever seen on Smith Lake. Pintail - Total of 2300 ! Green-winged Teal - Total of 3100 or several hundred less that at the same time last year. The large flocks of ducks contained mallards baldpates, pintails and green-winged teal in about the same pro- portions. Canvas-back - We first saw two in with a flock of the above on the south shore of the lake. Later in the day in bright sunlight in with a flock of almost 3,000 ducks we saw 102 canvasbck. We flushed the flock. The surfact feeders took off streight up to the south. The cans flapped off to the west single file, XXX giving me a count of 102, which could be considered accurate within at least 10. Most cans I have ever seen at one time. Ruddy Duck - A flock of nine on the south side of the lake. Two more were later seen at the junction of Smith and Bybee Lakes. Red-tail Hawk - Only two. Coot - 145 total along the east shore and north shore. Killdeer - One flewover. Gulls - About 3,000 in one flock near the junction of Bybee and Smith Lakes. Judging from what was seen at the nearby city dump on the 26th, these would all have been Herring and Glaucous-winged, as they fly back and forth between these two locations. No attempt was made XXX to get close enough on this date to identify these birds. Short-billed Gull - 26 counted in the slough which runs along just south of Smith Lake. Ring-necked Pheasant - Two between the slough and Smith Lake. Sparrow Hawk - One between the slough and lake. Red-shafted Flicker - Only one. Crow - Total of 260 listed. Crows passed over often on all day by small flocks and individuals. Gairdner Woodpecker - Total of five. Oregon Chickadee - Total of 40 which made up 4 flocks. Slender-billed Nuthatch - One Winter Wren - one on the Leadbetter property. Seattle Wren - One " " " " Golden-crowned Kinglet - One flock of about 5 near the Stauffer Chemical Co. between the lake and river. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - Total of 4 listed, mostly on Leadbetter prop. Pipit - Total of 102, most of which were scattered about on the south shore of Smith Lake where they flushed like snipe.
