December 2, 1948, W. side, Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay and Truckee R. outlet. 10-11 a.m. California. Clear and strong west wind. Redhead male in river - Lesser Scaups - large flock in Emerald Bay Bufflehead - 1 F or imm. on river above dam, with coots and 1 redhead. American Merganser - 1 F or imm. at lake outlet. Coots - dozens seen. 12& on river above dam. Stellar Jay - a few Clarke Nutcracker - at Emerald Bay. December 2, 1948, Boca Reservoir, Nevada Co., Calif. 2-230 p.m. Western Grebe - a couple Swan, probably a Whistler - a single immature bird along the west side of the reservoir, in a wind-protected cove. Very little pure white, most of body appearing grayish. Head and neck appeared to be tinted a golden-brown color. Observed at 200 yards, so details are lacking. It did seem the head profile had much of the canvasback head profile. Pintails - about 15 in mixed flock with Redheads, and Canvasbacks, and Lesser Scaups. Redtail Hawks - 2 observed perched on very low sagebrush on north side of Prosser Creek valley below Hobart Mills. Birds were within 100' of each other. A strong wind was blowing. Swainson Hawk - one on snag at edge of Boca Res. Coots - about 50 or 60 along west side and lower end of res. W. Kingfisher - 1 along west side. December 2, 1948, Donner Lake, 6000', Nevada Co., Calif. 345 p.m. Strong W wind. Pintails - a dozen, on the sand beach at the west end, in lea of wind. American Goldeneyes - one flock of 15 full males, and another flock of 3, of which there was one female or immature. Also 3 other males seen. Coots - about 150 scattered on wave-whipped waters at east end, and on N side.
