WEST AND EAST MORELAND PONDS, PORTLAND, OREGON November 25, 1948 12:15 to 13:30. Weather - cloudy Pied-billed Grebe - one seen on the east pond. Mallard - Nest to the baldpates, this was the most common species. Made no attempt to count, perhaps 300. Gadwall - Five flew in with baldpates on the XXXX east pond. Baldpate - Made no attempt to count, Over 1,000. Pintail - one male and one female in the casting pond. Green-winged Teal - Five lit on the east pond. Only one male. Shoveller - Three on the west pond, one male. Ring-necked Duck - About 12 on the east pond, mostly males. No Scaups! Canvas-back - One not yet in full male plumage diving for food on the edge of the east pond. Was under water most of the time we watched him. Buffle-head - About 30 on the east pond. Duck Hawk - Watched a dark duck hawk for some time disturb all the birds around the west pond. The baldpates on the lawn took to the casting pond. Domestic pigeons and pine siskins flew about with the duck hawk flying in and about them. The hawk did not take anything and finally flew over towards the east pond. Coot - Perhaps 50 - 75 in the area. Belted Kingfisher - One was seen flying over the west pond. Oregon Chickadee - Small flock around the west pond. Pine Siskin - Flock of about 50.
