MCFADDEN'S SOUTH SWAMP, AT BRUCE, BENTON CO., OREGON November 6, 1948 14:00 to 14:30 Weather - clear All observations were made from the road only. Mallard - About 20 could be seen on the main pond. Coot - About 25 off the south edge of the west bridge. Killdeer - About 10 flying about. Belted Kingfisher - One hovering and splashing in the water around the mallards. Tule Wren - one heard. Song Sparrows. November 13, 1948 15:30 to 17:00 Weather - high clouds. All observations made from road. American Bittern - One flew off from beside the road near the barn. Mallard - About 200 seen altogether. Mallards and other ducks began coming in in small flocks about 4:30 just as it was getting dark. It appeared that there were a few baldpates and pintails in with the mallards on the basis of size.. The poor light and darkness as well as distance made these ducks only silhouettes. Green-winged Teal - At least 50 came in in two flocks between 4:45 and 5:00 p.m. Wood Duck - Five flew out of the main pond. Bobwhite - one heard calling. Ring-necked Pheasant - one cock crowed and a hen flew into the swamp. Coot - About 20 off the west bridge. Mourning Dove - One was perched on KKKapower line along the highway by the Bruce store. Tule Wren - one heard calling. Horned Lark - one heard singing in the field east of the cabin. Red-wings - There must have been 300 of them at least. Oregon Towhee - two seen around the cabin. Golden-crowned Sparrow - one heard at the cabin. Song Sparrow - several seen.
