November 2, 1948, Folsom Reservoir, Sacramento, El Dorado, and Placer Counties. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Occasional showers. Pied-billed Grebes - several on small storage reservoir. Great Blue Heron Lesser Scaups - 18 on small reservoir for storage. Ruddy Ducks W. Redtail Hawks - quite a few - 10-12 of them. Sharp-shinned Hawk - 2 Cooper Hawk - 4 Sparrow Hawk - a couple. Valley Quail - at least 10 coveys seen, tho we weren't looking for them. Killdeer - few Mourning Dove - 5 seen Flickers - common California Woodpeckers - at least 10 seen. Many others heard Black Phoebe - many pairs seen. Int. California Jays - 30 or 40 seen. Crows - few Plain Titmouse - one flock Bush-tits - a couple of flocks Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wren - singing in Scirpus marsh. Canyon Wren - a couple Robin - 2 or 3 Pipits - 50-60 in one flock Cedar Waxwing - some California Shrike - a couple Audubon Warblers - flock in vineyard W. Meadowlarks - seem to be more or less flocked. California Red-wings - Brewer Blackbird California Purple Finches singing this a.m. Green-backed Goldfinches Sacramento Spotted Towhee Sacramento Brown Towhee - very common Savannah Sparrows Lark Sparrows - very common Juncos - very few Puget Sound White-crowned Sparrows - common Golden-crowned Sparrows - few calling. Song Sparrow - few. November 6, 1948, Perkins-Sloughouse, Sacto Co. 8-820 a.m. Grassland. Sparrow Hawk - 3 Pheasant - 1 Flicker - 6 Yellow-billed Magpies - 1 (just W. of Slough house) California Shrike - 3 W. Meadowlark - 250 Brewer Blackbirds - 7000-7500 of them !
